Dear Parents,
It was nice having a little break; now we’re energized and ready to go!
Thank you for all the nice Valentine’s cards and goodies. A big thank you goes to Aidan, AJ, Colin, Sabrina and Tatum’s families for their donations to the treat bag goodies. Everyone loved them! We had a great day and a fun party with our fourth grade buddies.
This week we will be starting a new homework assignment for the weekend. Every Friday, your child will bring home a journal bag. It will contain a stuffed animal, three stories related to the animal and the animal’s journal. I try to put a variety of books in each bag, so have your child read the books at his/her level. The more difficult books can be used for shared reading. Some bags are more difficult to do this with because it is about a specific character. Then have your child make up a story about what the animal did during its stay. Your child can dictate the story to you and you can write it in the journal or they can do the writing. We are working on telling a story with a beginning, middle and ending. Please do the writing in pencil. Pen tends to soak through to the other side and then it is difficult to read the previous story. The books read can be used on the reading record sheet. It’s also fun to read the other journal entries. Return the bag and all the contents to school on Monday. I have found that it is a great way to get my students motivated in creative writing. We read all the entries the next week, so have some fun with them! J
Please have your children bring back their sight word books for me to record their assessments every week. I will be assessing them tomorrow. Please have your children keep them in their folders so I can record their weekly progress. This will also show you what list they should be practicing. They will also begin a once a week homework assignment using the words from the list they are on.
Next Thursday, March 2nd, we will be celebrating Dr. Seuss’ birthday. We will be having a read-in with our 4th grade buddies, so students can bring a blanket and pillow so we can be comfy. We will also have a Dr. Seuss activity with our 6th grade buddies on Friday and then have more Dr. Seuss related activities next week. If you have any Dr. Seuss books at home, I would love to borrow them over the next two weeks to add to our collection. They will be returned the following Friday.
Next Thursday is also an important required parent meeting at 6:00 pm in the parish hall. This is the annual state of the school meeting. We will have daycare for Pre-K to 2nd grade students in the Pre K room and 3rd to 8th grade students will be in the gym. At the end of the meeting, parents will receive a free dress coupon and their children will get free dress the following day.
We will be having optional Spring Conferences next Friday, March 3rd. It is a half-day, so the conferences will run from 1:00-7:00 pm. I will be sending home a slip if I feel we need to meet about your child’s progress. If you have a concern and would like to meet, please send me a note or email and a time. I will schedule them on the hour and half-hour.
For Seasonal Math on Friday, your child needs to bring something red. Your child also needs to bring in three more glue sticks. It has been a very productive year! J We also have had a problem remembering to put the lids back on so we unfortunately had to throw away a lot of dried up glue sticks. L
Thank you!
