Dear Parents,
The journal bags have been making the home visits. We have enjoyed reading the stories. Remember that your children can dictate the story to you and you can write their story in the journal for them. This way, your child can concentrate on creating a story, rather than worrying about all the writing and spelling. We are working on telling the events at the beginning, middle and end of the story. Please don’t make up the story for them. Please write what they tell you. One problem we are having though is that they are not being returned the next week or parts are missing. It is important to return the bags and their contents the following Monday so we can keep them circulating. At the end of the year, each student will be able to keep a journal.
Last week was Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent. This will be our focus in Religion. We will be focusing on three things during Lent: praying, fasting and almsgiving. We are making a Lenten Triangle with our Lenten pledges for each area. They will come home this week so you will know what your child wants to do during Lent. Your child brought home a Rice Bowl last week. They will be collected on Good Friday, March 25th.
Also during Lent, we will be praying the Stations of the Cross with 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th graders every Tuesday at 2:30 in the church. Your child brought home a copy of the responses to practice for homework. We will be reciting the responses together, so they don’t have to be able to read all of it. I just want them to be familiar with it. They can read along with you as you point to the words. You can write this down as minutes read for the reading record sheet if you and your child read them on other days during the week. You are invited to come pray with us.
In Math, we will be starting our Measurement unit. We will also be working on using addition and subtraction sentences to make fact families. For Seasonal Math on Fridays this month, your child needs to bring something green. In Science, we are starting our Life Science unit and will be exploring living and nonliving things. In Social Studies, we will begin our last unit, Problem Solving, in Second Step. In Reading, we are working on consonant blends, compound words and sight words. The students have been working hard on their sight word books and are very proud of completing the lists that they are on. Please remember to have your children keep their Sight Word books in their folders so I can record their progress in them. We will also begin working with using the “magic e” to create long vowels. In Writing, we will be working with punctuation and using complete sentences. We have enjoyed hearing about all the adventures my journal bag critters have had over the weekends. Please remember that they are coming home on the weekends and set aside some time to help your child with this activity over the weekend.
Reminders:
Thank you,
Toni Royal
